Happy 4th Birthday!

Dear James,

I can't believe that today I'm sitting here writing your 4th birthday letter. It seems like just yesterday you were my tiny little baby. Although, I'm pretty sure you will always be my baby. You even promised me that you would stay little, but every time I look at you I think you're a little bigger.

This past year has flown by. You really lived up to being a "threenager"...especially the last half of the year. You've been finding your place in the world and have become even more independent, which has resulted in many battle of the wills. Even so, you have a knack for putting on a charming little smile and all is right in the world again.

You are always the life of the party. You're full of silliness, drama and jokes galore. You literally make me laugh every single day with your antics.

You are still a very picky eater, and have just about driven me to the brink of insanity about a million times. For now, you live off of yogurt and goldfish. You still eat baby food because it's the only way I can get you to eat any type of fruit (although you'll do a fruit pouch now and again). Sometimes I joke that you'll go to kindergarten with Gerber baby food in your lunchbox and somehow make a trend out of it. You finally decided you like pizza again once you discovered Parmesan cheese. You request "salt" each time we eat pizza now. You also discovered grilled cheese last week and that's basically all you've eaten since then. I wonder how long until you're sick of eating them?

You are still not potty trained and at this point I don't know what to do, but you'll figure it out eventually. You know what you're supposed to do, but you just won't do it!

You love anything with wheels. Cars, trucks, tractors, police cars, fire trucks. If it can roll, you'll play with it. I love watching you make up adventures. You'll line up your cars, you race them and you of course crash them! I love watching you build with blocks too. You have a huge imagination and come up with the most clever things to make.

This year you started preschool at DMCC. You picked out a Hot Wheels backpack, and couldn't wait to start. On your first day you marched right in and were ready to play and learn. It was so easy, but still bittersweet to leave you. I knew you would be in great hands though. Now you've made friends, learned even more and love your teachers.

I LOVE your passion for reading. You have this amazing memory that lets you learn words very quickly. By 3.5 you were reading books on your own. Most days you read me your bedtime stories, or we read them together. You can read all of the first grade sight words that Daniel brought home and most of the second grade words too. Some days it baffles me. I am so very proud of you.

You love going to church to see your friends. We talk about how much God loves you, and I think you understand fairly well. One day recently you told me how happy you were that God was changing the color of the leaves. I told you that we should say thank you to God, so we did. Then you erupted into giggles. "Mommy! God isn't here! I don't see him!" We talked and I told you that God is everywhere with us and talked about where all of those places might be. You enjoy praying. Often times you tell Jesus about your day, and you always thank him for the day and the weather. I pray that you always keep your faith and remember that no matter how young you are, you can always talk to Him.

I hope that your 4th year is full of fun and new adventures for you. And I hope it's full of clean underwear and far less sass...for my sake!

I love you so much my Jamesy boy!

Love,
Mommy
