The Big House On South Grand -PART 1

If walls could talk, they would tell of many happy memories in this house.

This was my Great Grandma's house. It was owned by my Great Uncle Larry who lived in California, but he told her as long as she lived, she could live there. Actually, Great Grandma lived there before Uncle Larry bought the house. She rented out the main floor for several years prior to him buying it. She was a care taker and had a small assisted living business.

I have fond memories of this house. In fact, I think anyone who ever entered it, walked out with a memory or two. Over the years I explored every inch of this house. All I need to do is close my eyes and I can see every nook and cranny. I'm not one to have recurring  dreams, but of anything thing I dream of, this house is what I dream of the most. I don't have any pictures from when we were little that are already scanned, but there are pictures on the reality website of the house now, so I'll be able to share a little more.

If you came through the front (which we almost never did), you would walk up onto the huge front porch. It's the porch that made me fall in love with all front porches. There was a giant porch swing and several chairs, so everyone could gather out there on a nice day. I spent hours on that old porch, swinging, talking, and watching the trains go by.

If you were to go inside, you would open the screen door, and if you were a kid like me, you would let it slam behind you, because you liked to hear it go, "Whap, whap, whap, whap!" before staying shut. Through the sets of double doors you walk into the grand entryway.

Out here at Christmas time you would have found a beautifully decorated Christmas tree and garland leading up the stairs.  Other memories include being lined up on the stairs in matching watermelon shirts one 4th of July. I also set up shop out there sometimes. Great Grandma let me set up a card table and play store. She was my customer and would pay in nickles, dimes and pennies. I of course, would get to keep the change. One time my Great Uncle Everett came over and bought a bag of candy corn from me...for a whole dollar! That was pretty exciting!

That door to the right leads to the closet under the stairs. Because it was so deep, it made for a great hiding spot while playing Hide and Seek.

This is the view you would have walking into the entry from the front doors.

The room that you can see into was the dining room. (In learning the original history of the house from my Grandma, this room was used as a music room when it was built in 1895). Normally the pocket doors would be closed, with a few exceptions of large family events. You would normally enter her apartment from a door on the right.

This is another view of the dining room

Funny, it seems much smaller in pictures than I remember! Up against the wall to the left of the window was her desk. A large dining table filled the center of the room and china filled the shelves in the corner (as seen in the first picture). Lots of  family dinners were enjoyed in here. Great Grandma was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain.

Through the pocket doors in this picture was the back bedroom. This is where I remember Great Grandma sleeping for the most part. There was this amazing green carpet. There were 2 twin beds and her dresser. It looks like it's the same wallpaper still.

Through the door on the back wall, you would walk into her closet. I know this sounds strange but I can still smell it. It was also a good hiding place! I always thought it was cool that there was a stained glass window inside of it. It makes more sense now that I've learned some of the history of the house. This was originally the dining room and the closet was added at some point.

The door to the right on next to the back wall led into the bathroom. There isn't much to share on that, other than that I loved her claw foot tub! And I learned that the bathroom was originally a Butler's Pantry. Very cool!

I think this is a good stopping place for now. I'll probably make this 3 parts, so I don't bore anyone to death.

A Visit With Great Grandma T

It's been quite awhile since I blogged. I always have thoughts and ideas floating around in my mind, but never take the time to write them out anymore.
This past weekend Daniel, Kendra and I went and spent a few days at our Grandma's house. We spent a lot of time reminiscing and going through old memories. I'm one who enjoys remembering the past. I think I may have gotten that from my grandma, because she seems to be the same way.

Growing up I used to LOVE going to the small town of Chariton, Iowa. It was 2 1/2 hours from home, which at the time seemed like it was on the other side of the country. In fact, each summer from the time I was probably 7 until I became a teenager I would go and spend a week or two with Grandma and Grandpa. Once I became a teenager I was far too "cool" for such things. I would poke fun at it and there were times I didn't even want to go because I didn't want to participate in the silly little games Grandma would make up. Did she think I was 5? (That was my way of thinking then.)

Now I am back to loving it. I want to cherish it as much as I can, because honestly, when my Grandma passes away (which I hope won't be for a long time still), I know I won't have any reason to really go back.

I'm going to try and be better at blogging in the next few weeks. I really want to write down my memories of Chariton, thus far.

For now though, I'll share my most recent memories from this past weekend.

Daniel was once again and little trooper on our drive to Chariton, which is about 5 hours away (and I thought 2 1/2 used to be long!). We stopped at a Hardees in Mt. Pleasant, IA so he could eat and I could change him. The changing part was quite the experience. He had a blowout and when I got him into the bathroom I discovered they had no changing table. (Now I understand other mom's frustrations about that!) I ended up changing him in his car seat with a burp cloth under him so it wouldn't get on the seat. Let's just say, by the time I was finished I was having the biggest hot flash known to man!

Kendra beat us there and I was quite excited to see both her and Grandma. As soon as I walked into the house, I could smell something delicious cooking and I hoped above all hopes that it was my favorite...chicken and noodles. It surely was! They were delicious!

This was also Grandma's first time to meet her great grandson. She took to him right away, as I knew she would.

I think we just hung out around the house that evening. Daniel didn't sleep the greatest that night, but we survived.

Monday morning Daniel and I came down and had breakfast with Grandma, while Kendra slept the morning away. I've always enjoyed breakfast with her. We always have nice little talks at the table. This time Daniel got involved in the chatting too. Then she watched him while I went upstairs to bathe and get ready for the day. Always nice to have someone watching him so I can have a few minutes of "Mommy Time".

When Daniel went down for a nap, Grandma insisted Kendra and I go out and do some shopping. We hit up the two hot spots in town...Pamida and Dollar General. :) Then we just drove around for a bit before going back. We drove up to our Great Grandma's old house and wished we could go in. It's empty and for sale. When we got back to the house we talked to Grandma about it. She wished it were one of the realtors she knows because we could've gone in then. Oh well. Instead though, she remembered a video that her sister...my Great Aunt Darlene filmed of the house in 1997. They had a Christmas open house and she wanted to show all of the decorations. My favorite part of it though was that I got to see my Great Grandma again. How cool!

That evening she pulled out a box that she had kept of my Grandpa's things. Very cool so see letters he and written home from WW2. Probably the coolest thing to me was getting to wear his dog tags.

Grandma also got one of her scrapbooks out. I loved this picture of her!

Oh, and of course, in between all of the reminiscing, we had Daniel time too!

On Tuesday, Grandma sent Kendra and I out to have sister time. She sent us to lunch at a new little coffee shop on the Square called, Get Mugged.

Then we went back to Pamida to look for something I needed, but ended up at good ol' HyVee instead. We weren't sure what else to do, but we knew Grandma would "kick us out" if we came back so soon, so we decided to go creep around Great Grandma's house and see if we could peek in the windows. (And of course tried the doors. I mean...they're always unlocked in the movies! Haha!)

I will dedicate a whole post just to this house one day.

We got back to the house just in time for me to calm Daniel down for a nap. Then our Great Aunt Lova and Uncle Charles came to visit. They are THEE cutest little couple ever. They're both 89 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on the day Daniel was born.

Grandma insisted we go do something else and she'd watch Daniel. We went up town for a bit and then Kendra remembered a park she went to with some friends once that has a big barrel you can walk in. Fun times followed!

Then we drove out to Red Haw and acted like fools just because.

Grandma treated us to ice cream that night and we just hung out and talked. Then Wednesday morning I got us all packed up again and we go ready to head home. Last pictures with Great Grandma!

All About The Boy

I can't help myself...I love talking about my kid.

The transition to the crib is still a work in progress, but in general the little man spends most of the night in his crib. I still get anxious/nervous at night. I have to talk myself down. I'm always fine until I shut off the light to go to sleep and then I start to worry. Silly, I know. I guess it's a mom thing. I usually end up getting up once more to check on him, before going to sleep myself.  Once I'm sleeping though, I kinda wish he would sleep a bit longer. Actually, it varies from night to night. Seems to be every other night we have a good night and then an not so good night. (Good news is tonight is scheduled to be a "good" one.) Good consists of around 5 hours of sleep in a row.  He's usually in his crib until 4-5 and then comes back in with me until it's time to get up. It's usually easier because he's harder to lay back down and keep him asleep after that. I was putting him down around 8:30, but I've since gone back to 9:30-10:00. Maybe one of these days I will solve the puzzle and know the magic time to get him down (probably right when Daylight Saving Time begins).

I continue to be amazed by him daily. You always hear people say that you they never felt so much love until they had a child. My whole heart swells when he smiles at me. He gives me these mischievous little grins sometimes, and I just know I'm gonna be in trouble when he starts moving!

His newest thing? He has learned to SCREAM. It's a scream/cry that says, "You better come pick me up RIGHT NOW!" and then promptly stops and smiles when we do. Fortunately I am "trained" in this area from all my years in daycare. We're gonna nip this one in the bud right away. As long as we know there is nothing wrong I won't pick him up and neither will Daddy. At least not right away. That just starts a vicious little cycle and then you end up with a baby on your hip 24/7. Obviously I won't let him cry and cry either. Sometimes he just needs something new to do. Last night he was screaming his head off. Jacob started to play Rock Band and Daniel went crazy! He was so excited and kicking his feet like a wild man!

Also, I'm very happy to say that Daniel finally took another bottle last night. I hadn't been trying hard, but in 2 months, Grandma and Grandpa will be baby-sitting while we go to Chicago, so I have make make sure he will take them. He refused them a couple of times, but I got faster flow nipples for them, and he downed the bottle for Jacob last night. Victory!

Next weekend Daniel and I are going on another road trip together. (This Stay-at-Home Mom thing is THEE BEST JOB in the world!). This time we're heading to Chariton to go visit my grandma. Kendra is on Spring Break then and she's going to drive down too. Super excited!! (Except the whole 6 hour drive, but at least Daniel is a trooper in the car).

Well, I've rambled enough for this post. :)
